So you’ve seen the epic pictures. Horseshoe Bend is on so many bucket lists. This place is guaranteed to be epic, right? Well… no.
What is all this Horseshoe Bend Nonsense?
We decided to head to Horseshoe Bend as our next stop after the Grand Canyon. It’s a couple of hours drive. When we got there, it was pretty crowded, and you have to pay to get in. After paying and parking, we set off towards the bend. It’s a short, downhill walk to the bend. It was insanely crowded and filled with people everywhere. I’m more of a head-off and leave me alone type person, and seeing all these influencers shoot selfies was aggravating. I can’t complain, though, because I was there to take pictures too.
I’ll be the first to say, after just having seen the sunset at the Grand Canyon the night before, this was quite the let-down. Is it cool? Sure. Are you going to spend hours here? No, not really. It was simply just a pitstop along the way for us. It was nice to see, and I’m sure there was more to see and do, but we were already done with all the pushy and rude people.
I probably would have enjoyed this way more if there had not been so many people. It would have been nice to sit in the silence of the desert and look out over the bend… maybe have some lunch. Unfortunately, with the sheer amount of people, anything relaxing is not possible. You try and sit, and people feel the need to get so close as to trip over you. Do you want to get away from people? They will follow you because they think you know of a good spot they don’t know about.
Was Horseshoe Bend Really That Bad?
If this is something on your bucket list and you want to see this place, I say go for it. Try to go in the off-season. Perhaps it will be less busy once covid is over and people can travel out of the country. For the person passing by on the highway that wants to stop, sure, I’d say if you are already driving by, it’s worth it to see. For the person that is planning their entire trip around this place, I’d say you might want to rethink. I’m sure there are people out there that love this place and think I am completely crazy, and to that, I say we can agree to disagree. If you are already in the area, there are many other things to incorporate into your day. Just make sure this isn’t the only thing on the Agenda.
